Marshall Islands Nuclear Day of Remembrance Project
In 2024 Blades of Change (nuclear storytelling and arts initiative founded by Jill Drllevich) honored Marshallese Nuclear Remembrance Day at the Burke Museum in collaboration with Hanford Challenge and master weaver Emma Joran from the Marshall Islands.
Over the course of three days inside the Burke Museum's Artist Studio, master Joran demonstrated a weaving technique with pandanus to create a piece of art over a repurposed nuclear fan blade. Jill Drllevich painted the Marshallese flag and donated the nuclear fan blade. The Burke Museum, and Hanford Challenge collaborated to support this project.
The nuclear sculpture, entitled, Jerbal in Kakememej, was dedicated at the HealthPoint Midway Clinic in Des Moines, WA on Monday, March 24, 2025 for permanent display.
